History of Calcutta Medical College
The history and heritage of our college is described in details here.
Here are some interesting highlights:
- On the 28th of January, 1835, an official resolution was announced by Lord Bentinck whereby a decision was taken to establish a medical college in Calcutta. Hence this day is observed as the Foundation Day of our college.
- The total number of students in the first batch was 50. They received a stipend between Rs 7 to 12 per month.
- The first examination was held on October 1838. Only 11 out of the 50 appeared for the examination.
- After the fourth day of the examinations, 7 more students dropped. Only 4 remained to complete the examinations. These 4 were the first batch of Allopath doctors to have had passed out from our college. Their names were Umacharan Sheth, Rajkrishna De, Nabin Chandra Mitra and Dwarkanath Gupta
- MJ Bramley was the first principal of the college, and HH Goodeve was the first Surgeon Professor.
- Madhusudhan Gupta, along with 4 other students were the first to dissect a human cadaver.
- The MCH building was opened on 1st March, 1852.
- In 1857 our college got affiliated under the University of Calcutta.
- The Central Medical Council of Great Britain recognised the medical degree of Calcutta University in 1892.
- The first lady student, Kadambini Ganguly entered the college in 1884.
